Logo Talk
It's been a week since Nintendo unveiled the finalized design of the Nintendo DS. From a quick look at various forums, it seems that the design is a hit. I'll forego singing Nintendo's praises though; I have another topic in mind.
While the system's design is very attractive, it's the logo that caught my eye. The logo is simple and elegant. No fancy graphics, no colors. Its style is sleek and futuristic—completely complementary to the design of the system. What makes the logo great though, are the two O's which form a mock dual-screen.
In hindsight, it seems like the obvious thing to do: dual-screen system, two rectangular O's to mimic it. That's what makes it a great logo. It gets its message across in a way that feels natural. Coming up with such a logo though, is quite hard. It must be easy to understand, yet can't be redundant or over-done. Logos shouldn't yell at people or beat them over the head. Logos should be subtle and elegant.
I haven't done much logo design for years. I went logo-crazy when I first started web design. I designed a lot of garish and ineffective logos. Maybe that scared me off. But I intend to focus on logo design for the next redesign of this weblog. I always believed Seasons deserved a logo. Hopefully I'll come up with something good.
(And yeah, I never finished writing The Making of Caramel Skies. Hopefully I'll get around to it before the fall semester.)
